Health and food security

HEALTHIER LIVES

We believe that ALL our neighbors deserve access to healthy, fresh food and a sense of well-being.

Twenty-three percent of Connecticut households with children are food-insecure. We believe deeply that all families deserve access to healthy, fresh food. Yet too often, this type of food is simply more expensive than low-to-moderate-income families can afford. Through our Healthy Savings program, we are able to make fresh produce more affordable and accessible for children, families, and older adults.

Recognizing that this work cannot be done in a silo, we continue to deepen our partnership and expand our work with the Stamford and Danbury Food Collaboratives. Through these two initiatives, and with the support of dozens of community partners, we are taking a holistic approach to address food insecurity in two of Connecticut’s largest and most diverse cities.

Through our advocacy, we promote long term supports for our neighbors in need.

Everyone should have access to fresh, healthy and culturally appropriate food they need to thrive. Unfortunately, food is often the first basic need to go when ALICE is struggling to make ends meet. Food insecurity is an unseen need for ALICE who may not qualify for government assistance or participate in emergency feeding programs. At UWCWC we are committed to uplifting community solutions to food insecurity, while advancing long-term systems change for a healthier, more equitable community for all.
